- Revisions for StreamWorks Player 3.1 rev H
- ------------------------------------------
- Revision H of the StreamWorks Player 3.1 installation contains the
- following enhancements:
-
- The installation program now sets the StreamWorks Player's audio
- playback settings to ensure optimum quality. The new default
- settings are: "Optimize Audio Quality" and "Stereo". If you are
- running the StreamWorks Player on a slower PC (such as a 486 or
- sub-133mHz Pentium) and you experience audio dropouts, try
- changing these settings.
-
- The installation program now installs Build 7 of the StreamWorks
- Player's ActiveX control. This revised ActiveX Control features
- the following enhancements:
-
- When the control is manipulated through authoring tools such
- as MS Visual Basic, it no longer opens/plays a stream when in
- design mode.
-
- Application authors accessing the control's VBscript interface
- (for example, through MS Visual Basic) can now properly set the
- control's "Fullscreen" property at design-time.
-
- Application authors accessing the controls VBscript interface
- (for example, hrough MS Visual Basic) can now properly set the
- control's "Mute" property at design-time.

- New Features for 3.1
- --------------------
- The new StreamWorks Player features are designed to work with
- StreamWorks Servers and MPEGLive! Encoder versions 3.1 or higher.
-
- MPEG Layer 3 Support
- --------------------
- Playback support for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 layer 3 audio streams. MPEG
- layer 3 audio provides the best quality audio at medium to low
- data rates.
-
- Connectionless Streams
- ----------------------
- A Connectionless Stream is a special type of stream that
- originates at either an MPEGLive! Encoder as a Live Feed, or at a
- StreamWorks Server as a Live Feed or Live File. Connectionless
- streaming is typically used anywhere one way streaming is
- required, such as Satellite applications that lack a back-channel.
- You open the stream by clicking on a StreamWorks link (if one if
- available) or by typing in a Connectionless URL in the Player's
- Open Stream dialog box. If the stream is unavailable when you try
- to open it, the StreamWorks Player can begin Connectionless
- Listening mode and notify you or automatically open and play the
- stream when the stream becomes available. Set the options for
- Connectionless Listening in the StreamWorks Player Network
- Settings dialog box.
-
- Multicast Interface
- -------------------
- Designed for systems with more than one network interface, the
- Multicast Interface feature provides the ability to identify which
- network interface will receive a multicast stream. This feature is
- enabled in the Network Settings dialog box.

- Notes
- -----
-
- Demo Folder
- -----------
- The StreamWorks Player's "Demo" folder is part of the "Getting
- Started with StreamWorks Kit" which includes a CD-ROM and Manual.
- If you do not have these materials (for example, if you downloaded
- the StreamWorks Player from the Internet), please disregard the
- files in the StreamWorks Player's "Demo" folder. Any attempt to
- play streams using these files will be unsuccessful as they were
- intended to be used in conjunction with a StreamWorks Server. If
- you wish, you may delete the Demo folder without affecting any of
- the StreamWorks Player functionality.
-
- -----------------
- Known Limitations
- -----------------
-
- Mute Setting
- ------------
- The Player's mute setting may fail during playback when you seek
- using the slider.
-
- If you close the StreamWorks Player while the sound is muted, your
- Windows sound may also be muted. To enable sound, click on the
- Windows speaker in the task bar and make sure the mute button is
- not selected.
-
- Palette Focus
- -------------
- After running another application that uses a palette, the
- StreamWorks Player may not correctly remap its palette. This
- occurs only on systems running DirectDraw with a display driver
- set to 256 colors.
-
- Work-arounds include clicking focus on the video stream window,
- running in a non-DirectDraw mode, or changing the video display
- driver setting to 65k colors or higher. Running in non-DirectDraw
- mode or changing the video display driver setting will degrade the
- player's video frame rate. This may not be a noticeable slowdown
- on systems with a 200Mhz or higher processor.
-
- Prolonged Playback
- ------------------
- Prolonged playback of a Live File or a Live Feed can result in
- loss of button functionality or Player error. If an error occurs,
- close and re-open the Player.
-
- File Open Errors
- ----------------
- Opening an audio/video stream using File --> Open may produce an
- error if the currently opened stream is not closed first. This can
- also occur when opening a stream without a StreamWorks link on a
- Web site if the currently opened stream is not closed first.
-
- If you type in a URL to a Connectionless Stream and the stream is
- currently unavailable, an hourglass may not display while
- searching for the stream.
-
- Interface State
- ---------------
- While the StreamWorks Player is listening for a Connectionless
- Stream, the Player's interface may appear in an incorrect state.
-
- DIB Mode Playback
- -----------------
- When any application is placed on top of the video window, the
- StreamWorks Player changes to DIB mode instead of DirectDraw. When
- this occurs, you may experience less than optimal performance.
- Video cards that support overlay do not experience performance
- loss.
-
- ---------------
- Troubleshooting
- ---------------
-
- Audio Dropouts
- --------------
- If you are experiencing dropouts in audio you are most likely
- losing network packets. Once a stream is playing, check the
- "Diagnostics" dialog under the "Settings" menu to see what your
- network 'reliability' is and how many packets you are losing. Try
- contacting a server which is geographically closer to you or is
- not as busy. Check your Connection setting and make sure you are
- using the correct Connection Rate for your network connection.
-
- DirectDraw
- ----------
- Many implementations of DirectDraw drivers cause problems with
- certain video display adapters and driver combinations. By default
- 'Use DirectDraw' in the Playback Settings menu is disabled because
- of this. If your system supports DirectDraw, enabling this may
- give you better performance if you are playing high frame-rate
- streams (24 to 30 frames per second). If you experience any
- difficulty playing video streams with 'Use DirectDraw' enabled,
- please disable it and notify the Technical Support department
- through our Web site at http://www.xingtech.com/.
